Turning over a new leaf

Filed under: Life in general — Cyndi at 7:20 am on Tuesday, April 24, 2007

A couple of weeks ago, I decided it was time for a change. I wasn’t feeling great about myself, hadn’t exercised in weeks, and was just feeling generally blah.

So, I joined a gym, hired a personal trainer, and decided to completely change my diet and my lifestyle. I spent an entire Saturday cleaning out my pantry, fridge, and freezer, and tossing all of the unhealthy food. I was truly amazed at how much junk we had. Lots of bad carbs (not whole grains) and lots of things with processed sugars. Yuck. [I had no idea that corn syrup was the second ingredient in ketchup. Or the third ingredient in Prego spaghetti sauce. The things you learn when you actually read labels!]

Since that day, I’ve taken my lunch to work every day (spinach or mixed greens with grilled chicken or shrimp, lowfat cottage cheese, and fruit), have been drinking lots of water (no soda!), and have been exercising at least 6 times a week, either weights or cardio. Quite a change for someone used to eating out for lunch every day, and whose idea of exercise is getting work after 8:30 am and having to walk all the way from the far reaches of the parking lot.

Even though I’ve yet to see any results, I’m feeling a lot better about myself already. Instead of just being miserable because none of my summer clothes fit me anymore, I’m doing something about it. Hopefully it will work, because, damn I want a hot fudge sundae already!

I’m also going to try to find some more health & fitness oriented blogs to read to keep me on track. (Not that I won’t still read knitting blogs, but those of you who post frequently about cooking - I’ll be skipping those posts!) Christine started a great blog about how she lost 30 pounds. Lolly has also posted occassionally about her quest to get in shape. Anyone know of any other good health & fitness blogs or other resources that you’d like to share?

Beautiful photo. Good for you for making such positive changes!! Recently I’ve been struggling with changing my completely unhealthy lifestyle as well (i.e. sitting on my rear 8 hours a day, not exercising at all, indulging in my addiction for junk foods, etc.). I’m sure it doesn’t look that way on my blog because I’ve been baking up a storm. To be honest, I don’t think I could ever completely give up the sweets, but I’d really like to achieve more balance so that at least I have *some* healthy lifestyle habits. I was pretty good about exercising and eating well for a few weeks, and then I fell off the wagon when my work schedule changed. =( I’m aiming to get back on the wagon.
I would be interested in hearing more about how it’s working to have a personal trainer. Also, what resources are you using to figure out what’s good/bad?
Thanks for sharing!

I subscribe to That’s Fit (thatsfit.com), which is more of a compendium of fitness/health stories from the news, but there are some good tips in there as well. It has a ton of posts, though. The other that I read, I don’t know if you’re running at all, is JogBlog (jogblog.wordpress.com)- I just really like her, she has a nice wrapup at the end of every post and I feel like she’s a real person, as opposed to someone who is trying to PR every time they leave the house.

Good for you for making a great effort and doing new stuff- I feel like making that first step can sometimes be the hardest (at least for me).

My favorite new site is thedailyplate.com. It is an amazing resource where you can keep track of calories, exercise, and track your progress. It even tells you how many calories you can eat to reach your goal. Lots of people at work have been using it and have had lots of success.

Good luck!

Good for you! But c’mon, not ALL of my food posts are about cupakes! Okay, fine, just the one lentil dish, but that’s healthy eating! And I’ll be posting more healthy food stuff too ;)

hi cyndi - goodness, it’s like you read my mind!! (minus the cleaning out the fridge/freezer/pantry, i dread doing that) i’ve been thinking the EXACT same thing, since February - what got me going is standing in my closet and staring at all the clothes that don’t fit me right any more, i want to fit them again! i don’t want to go shopping all over again! i don’t have a personal trainer, but i do try to get cardio in at least 20-30 min a day, i have a couple workout DVDs i have yet to pop in (they are just sitting there, waiting for me), and i’ve set up an online calorie-counting journal at one of the many free sites out there.

i don’t really make public my fitness goals - i’ve had friends who try to discredit me or say that i don’t need to do what i’m doing (but it’s not about being “thin” so much as to being HEALTHY at the same time too… right?) =)

Congrats on the new leaf - I’m sure it will grow into something wonderful producing much energy :)

I’m in the same boat of needing to be healthier - and it’s just the little things, like afternoon chocolate, that need to go.

WOO HOO for you! You’ve made it through the hardest part, really. seriously. Getting started is much harder than keeping it going. It’ll become a habit soon. I’m trying to find fitness podcasts that aren’t TOO MUCH and are pleasant to listen to so I have something to occupy my mind while I’m jogging/walking/cursing. You know. If I find some good ones I’ll send them your way.

Good for you! I’m in a fitness minded mood right now myself, well except for the Pepsi I’m drinking right now, but it’s late and I’m still at work, and I need the caffeine and Sugar. But regardless, everyone at my new work is on Weight Watchers, and while I’m not ready to jump on the WW bandwagon, I am ready to get up and exercise and really watch what I eat.

That sounds like a great plan to me. I’ve been dreaming about a personal trainer for, well, forever. I don’t know that one’s in my budget, but I should find out more about it rather than assuming I can’t afford it. I can’t wait to see how you do - I’m pulling for you.

Hi,

Lovely design — congrats on the migration to a new web locale! FYI,I had a transient error the first time I went to your old site this morning when it tried to transfer me automatically; it took me to an error message. So I tried going to the new domain manually, and it took me to a site that said, “The domain onpinsandneedles.com is for sale. To purchase, call BuyDomains.com at 781-839-7903 or 866-866-2700.” Weird!

Sorry I don’t have any good links to provide, but I’m interested in the ones others have shared in the comments. (I’m sort of in the same spot you were in — BEFORE you made all the healthful changes!)

Just wanted to delurk for these comments and also to mention that I added your blog to my sidebar’s blogroll as a favorite knitblog I visit (via my Bloglines.com subscription). I’m going back to my site now to correct your link to the new URL. ;o)

Followup — ah, I see; you’re an “org,” not a “.com.” I’m starting to pay better attention — must have needed more coffee this morning!
