To bead or not to bead, that is the question

Filed under: Simple Knitted Bodice — Cyndi at 10:45 pm on Monday, August 28, 2006

I was speeding right along on Simple Knitted Bodice (SKB), until I got to the section where the beading starts.

Here’s where I’m at with it now - done with the first set of purl ridges and 2.5 lace repeats (out of 5 or 6 total).

Knitting with the beads really slows me down. First, I have to string the beads on the yarn, then I have to figure out how to space the beads somewhat randomly, using the right amount of beads. Since I’m knitting from two balls of yarn (no pooling for me!), I decided to string beads on one ball, putting beads on every other row. The whole process is fairly tedious, and so far I’m ambivalent about the result.

Does this look weird? Are the beads too much? They definitely distract a bit from the pattern, and they are kind of dark compared to the yarn. I decided to use the coffee colored beads because they were by far the least expensive (2 cents/bead, compared to 10 cents/bead for all the others), most readily available (I’ll need about 400 or more of them and am not patient enough to do a special order), and most people thought they looked nice in my swatch.

I’m not really the kind of person that wears beaded clothing. In fact, I don’t think I have a single thing in my closet that is beaded, other than maybe a cocktail dress or two. I’m worried that even if this sweater turns out wonderfully that it won’t be my style because of the beads. So, do I trudge forward and rip later if I hate the beads? Or, do I save myself the trouble and do it now?

In other fiber related topics - does anyone watch the Discovery Channel show “Dirty Jobs“? Or, more likely, is there a man in your life who is obsessed with watching it? Todd watches it religiously, and was playing the latest episode from the DVR while I was knitting tonight. Normally, I don’t really care for the show - it can get pretty disgusting sometimes. (past shows have included an avian vomitologist and casino food recycler) But the 8/22 episode featured an alpaca farm! The host of the show visited an alpaca farm in Shingle Springs, CA, sheared an alpaca, and learned to card the fiber and spin it. Cool! I’m not sure how that qualifies for a “dirty job”, but it was definitely fun to watch.

Hm. I’m on a toss up. I did like the beads on the swatch, but mabye it’s just too many on the sweater? I also think it’s taking away from the yarn and pattern. Maybe less beads?

I sadly have to agree they are too much, IMHO.

If you are already ambivalent about the beads at this stage, then it’s probably time for a change. If you want to continue the beading exercise maybe it would be wise to use the smaller green beads - subtle, small - and just bead the edging?

Great photos of Yosemite, btw. I am envious ’cause I haven’t been there this year yet.

To be honest, I do think that the beads are taking away from the sweater. The yarn is *so* pretty, but the beads are saying “look at me, look at me!” I agree with Lynette — maybe try the green beads? Do you think you would still like the sweater if it didn’t have any beads at all?

on the beads….. I like it without :-)

and on the Dirty Jobs show….. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Shingle Springs? That is about 5 min from me. I didn’t even know there was an alpaca farm there!

I am off to find the phone book…..

Well I have to agree with everyone else, I think the beads are a bit much, and like you I doubt I’d actually wear it. The yarn is gorgeous on it’s on. I think I’d go beadless.

I say trust your gut. It doesn’t sound like you’re in love with the beads and I can’t imagine you’re going to grow to love them as time goes on. Cut your losses, rip out the little bit you’ve done and go on sans beads. Just my opinion of course.

Hi, a lurker here — my two cents’ worth agrees with your instincts and the others who’ve commented; the coffee-colored beans are distracting. Green would be nice — or none at all? Cute sweater, though.

Quick question, though: What did you mean about knitting with two balls and pooling — does this eliminate or minimize it? Would love to know!

hi cyndi, sorry, another similar vote to rip back if you so desire. it sounds like you are hesitant about it.
as for the dirty jobs show on the discovery channel, we watch it too. not religiously, but wayne is glued to the tv when it’s on. i think its more of a morbid fascination (or a reaffirmation that his job isn’t so bad). =)

I love watching dirty jobs. Being a person with a ridiculously active gag reflex regarding smells, I am fascinated by the repugnant, smelly tasks of others. I wonder, “How do they do that?”

I must vote with the others in regards to frogging the beaded section now rather than deciding later that you hate it. The yarn itself is beautiful. Besides, once you’re done knitting then if you find just the right green (or other color) beads in any size then you can always sew them on. I’m going to attempt some beaded yarn too and mine might be catching flies in the same pond as yours.

I love the yarn so I would have to say, yes, the beads are distracting from the yarn and the pattern. With the different colors and the pattern the beads my be too much.

The yarn is fabulous and your knitting is perfect. I think you will be happier with the finished results without the beads.

Sorry I wanted to ask which yarn this is? Pure and Simple?

Oh my gosh! Yes I love Dirty Jobs (because I frequently work in dirty nasty plants that he visits). AND, I SAW the ALPACA episode! It was awesome, I was too excited than I should have been. :)
