Sock yarn suggestions?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Cyndi at 7:35 am on Tuesday, February 7, 2006

Does anyone have any suggestions for a sport weight (or heavier) yarn that would be good for socks? My sock pal has requested thick socks, and most of my sock knitting thusfar has been with sock-weight yarns on size 1 needles… Thanks in advance for the tips.

Not much else going on for knitting these days. I’m in the final stretch of my bar preparation. The test is in exactly 2 weeks. (YIKES!) Suffice it to say, I will be relieved when it is done and I can have my life back again.

Until then, I’m going dark. Wish me luck on the test, and I’ll be back on the 24th.

Try Green Mountain Spinnery yarn. I made a pair of wonderful 2 color socks in one of their patterns for my daughter for Christmas and they were really fun to knit and the weight of the yarn feels nice in your hands.

I used Mountain Colors Weaver’s Wool Quarters (just a smaller amount - perfect for a nice pair of socks). It’s a sport weight yarn and I used #2 needles. The socks made a nice thick sock, but not so thick you can’t wear them with shoes. Another thought is the Log Cabin socks from Handknit Holidays - they’re a thick cabled sock that are really cute (in fact, I want to make some one of these days).

As for the bar…breathe. You’ll do fine. You’re very prepared and the anticipation is way worse than the actual test. Of course, I wish you great luck and I’ll be thinking of you.

I was out looking for sock yarn a few days ago and saw some Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sport that was gorgeous. I’ve also made socks from KnitPicks Wool of the Andes (its’ worsted)–they’re quite thick. A little too thick to wear with full shoes, but would work with slippers/clogs/Birks. Good luck!

I should have some superwash in the shop in the next day or two…and you get 10% off as a member of the KAL… You can use about a size #3 needle with superwash.

Hello:
You can use artyarns supermerino, it holds up really well when you wash and they have beautiful colors, I’ve also used Fancy Image Yarn.com, their yarn is super soft and great colors, you only need 1 skein and the price is right.
Good luck

I just knit a pair of socks using Cashsoft DK on US 1s. It made a very firm fabric that is still nice and soft. And it’s machine washable. I do like Mountain Colors WWQ a lot too. The colors are incredible and the yarn is very nice to work with but it’s handwash only.

You will ace the bar! You’ve been studying so much you know everything, just relax if you can.

I second the Lorna’s Laces Sport and I’ve also heard good things about Mountain Bear.

My first (and so far, until the Olympics, only) pair of socks were made from Cleckheaton Country 8-ply. They’re very thick and warm, and are actually too big to wear with shoes, but the friend who taught be to knit them wears socks out of this yarn. I think he must buy his shoes a half-size too big!

Good luck on the bar!

Interlacements Toasty Toes are sport weight … 6 sts per inch. Colours are gorgeous too. You can go to their website to have a look:

Hello Cyndi,
I love your blog! Found it when I was searching for Miniature Schnauzer cross stitch. I own a Mini, also! You have inspired me to start knitting! I am working on my first project.. a scarf. Took a intro lesson, then came home and forgot! Argh!

Good luck with your exams! Im sure you will do great!

If handwash is ok , then Debbie Bliss’s Baby Cashmerino makes a great pair of socks — maybe not quite as durable, though.
